      Research topics: Study of dense alkali vapours in high temperature sapphire cells and high-pressure light sources with alkali vapours by means of femtosecond lasers, construction of components for femtosecond laser, different amplification stages and other control units for e.g. time shaping of femtosecond laser pulses, research and development of new light sources in the femtosecond region for the application in biophysics and dentistry.

      Effects of strong correlations in electronic systems like transition metals oxides, heavy fermions, rare earths compounds, superconducting cuprates, semimetals and semiconductors, manganates with giant magnetoresistance , magnetic impurities, Kondo insulators, quantum dots and nanotubes.

      Techniques: Solving of theoretical models (single impurity Anderson model, periodic Anderson model, Hubbard model, Falicov-Kimball model, Holstein model) by standard many body theory methods (functional integrals, perturbation expansion for Green’s functions, scaling of bond constants, renormalization group, and exact methods when possible) and comparison of theoretical results with experimental data.

      Research topics: Investigations of interactions of atom and subatom particles and electromagnetic radiation (quantum probes) with surfaces as means of acquiring information on their structure, electronic, dynamic and reactive (chemical) properties. Within these studies the above listed properties of clean crystal surfaces, adsorbate covered surfaces, adsorbate layers (mono and multilayer films) and nanostructures are investigated.

      Techniques: Methods of field theory in statistical physics (propagators, Green’s and correlation functions for finite temperatures), quantum theories of elastic and inelastic scattering for systems with reduces symmetry, exact diagonalisation of Hamiltonian matrix, numerical solving of classical and quantum equations of motion.

      Research topics: Defects and exchange interactions in low dimensional (D<3) magnetic systems. Magnetism of new compounds with transition metals as spin carriers in various ligand surroundings, new magnetic lattices and their magnetic anisotrophy, magnetic ordering in these lattices, and their symmetries.

      Techniques: Faraday's method of dc magnetic susceptibility measurements, high sensitivity torque magnetometry. Measurements are performed in temperature range from 2K to 330 K and in magnetic fields of up 0.9 T.
